Social discussion platform Reddit Inc. fended off a subpoena from a group of movie producers seeking to uncover the identity of seven Reddit users who discussed how they pirated movies without consequence from the internet service provider RCN Telecom Services LLC.
A federal magistrate judge for the Northern District of California ruled that the First Amendment right to anonymous speech trumps the movie production companies’ legal request, which stemmed from copyright litigation they brought against internet providers in New Jersey federal court.
