An Illinois state trooper who smelled raw cannabis coming from within a car had probable cause to conduct a warrantless search of the vehicle, the Illinois Supreme Court said Thursday.

Though the smell of burnt cannabis in a car is insufficient to trigger probable cause for a warrantless search under Illinois law, the outcome is different here, because a state motor vehicle law requires that the transportation of raw cannabis be in an odor-proof container, Justice P.
