Publishers Drop Verizon Music Piracy Suit After High Court Loss

Publishers representing the bulk of the music industry dropped a copyright lawsuit against Verizon Communications Inc. over music piracy in the wake of a recent US Supreme Court decision scaling back liability for contributory copyright infringement.

UMG Recordings Inc., Warner Music Inc., Sony Music Entertainment and dozens of other plaintiffs filed their voluntary dismissal notice Wednesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The court had paused the case pending the high court’s resolution of a similar suit against Cox Communications Inc., in which the justices ultimately sided with the internet service provider.
