PNC Beats Wepay Patent Infringement Suit Over Banking App Design

PNC Bank NA beat a patent suit over the design of its mobile banking app, with a Pennsylvania federal judge finding there was no plausible infringement claim.

Wepay Global Payments LLC sued PNC in September—one of several cases the Delaware-based business has filed against banks, retailers, and tech companies. It alleged part of PNC’s app that interfaces with the Zelle digital payments network infringed Wepay’s patented design, which includes an icon array of three squares that simulate a QR code.
