A Pennsylvania prison beat an infringement lawsuit over a patent on technology used to scan prisoner’s mail, convincing a federal judge the patent covers an idea not eligible for protection.
Smart Communications IP Holdings’ U.S. Patent No. 10,291,617 covers a system for scanning incoming mail and electronically distributing it to inmates. The company sued York County, Pa., and the York County Prison over the use of a purportedly infringing system.
