Peddinghaus Beats Rival’s Suit Over Machine Software Technology

A Ficep Corp. patent related to factory machine software is invalid because it’s directed to an abstract idea, a Delaware federal judge ruled in a win for rival Peddinghaus Corp.

Ficep and Peddinghaus make steel beams used in construction projects. Ficep accused its rival of infringing U.S. Patent No. 7,974,719, which relates to an automation system for manufacturing objects.

Judge Richard Andrews in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware ruled the patent was directed to only the abstract idea of “identifying, extracting, and transferring data from a design file for the purpose of manufacturing an object.” ...
