Pearson Education, Others Sue Shopify Over Pirated Textbooks

Pearson Education Inc. and four other major publishers of educational textbooks accused Shopify Inc. of enabling the sale of pirated digital textbooks, test packets, and solution materials, according to a Virginia federal court.

Shopify knowingly hosts a “world of digital textbook pirates” and has ignored the publishers’ notices detailing the specific copyright and trademark infringement, Pearson and others alleged in a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Bedford Freeman & Worth Publishing Group LLC, also known as Macmillan Learning, Cengage Learning Inc., Elsevier Inc., and McGraw Hill LLC joined Pearson in the lawsuit. ...
