Patent Office Seeks Input on AI, Need for New Likeness Laws

The US Patent and Trademark Office is calling for advice on whether Congress should create a new federal law to protect name, image, voice, and likeness given the development and proliferation of AI.

The agency is working to address whether existing laws prohibiting unauthorized use of an individual’s name, image, and likeness are sufficient as part of President Joe Biden’s October executive order to regulate AI, according to a Federal Register notice scheduled to publish on July 1. The PTO plans to hold a roundtable to discuss potential strategies on August 5.
