Patent Office Launches Expedited Pilot Program in Standards Push

The US Patent and Trademark Office announced Tuesday that the agency is launching a pilot program to incentivize US-based companies, universities, and nonprofits to participate in standard-setting organizations.

The Standards Participation and Representation Kudos (SPARK) Pilot Program will accept petitions for expedited examination of certain patent applications or appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board from applicants that have “meaningfully participated” in a standard-setting organization, according to a notice scheduled for publication in the Federal Register Wednesday.
