Openet Asks High Court to Revisit Patentability in Software Case

The U.S. Supreme Court should clarify which patent sections can be used to justify patent protection for an invention covering an abstract idea, software provider Openet Telecom Inc. said in a petition for review.

The company asked the Supreme Court to reverse a ruling that four software-related patents belonging to Amdocs (Israel) Ltd. were eligible for patent protection, in a petition docketed July 27 (Openet Telecom Inc. v. Amdocs (Israel) Ltd., U.S., 17-136, cert petition filed 7/24/17).

Amdocs’ response to the petition is due August 28.
