OpenAI to Produce 20 Million ChatGPT User Logs in Copyright Suit

A federal judge ordered OpenAI Inc. to hand over 20 million anonymized ChatGPT user logs to newspapers suing it in a copyright battle over its generative AI model.

Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang said producing those user logs in whole is appropriate and granted the newspapers’ motion to compel production. The publications had demanded production of the user logs to inspect how ChatGPT is used to create outputs they say infringe their copyrights, and OpenAI had pushed back, citing privacy concerns.
