OpenAI Must Produce Slack Messages About IP Risks, Data Deletion

A federal judge ordered OpenAI Inc. to turn over internal communications to news publishers and authors suing the company for copyright infringement.

Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang on Wednesday rejected OpenAI’s confidentiality claims for most of the requested documents, finding they didn’t qualify as legal advice. The documents include messages on the platform Slack and emails about OpenAI’s AI training process, the deletion of material from the shadow library known as Library Genesis, and strategies to expand their collection of books.

Plaintiffs also seek OpenAI’s communications with attorneys about the deletion of Library Genesis data, a request which remains pending. ...
