OpenAI, Microsoft Sued by Newspapers Over Copyrighted Inputs (2)

A group of newspaper companies including the publishers of the New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune sued Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI Inc. in New York federal court alleging they have profited from “massive copyright infringement” over AI inputs.

OpenAI copied millions of copyrighted articles to train its generative AI products including ChatGPT and Copilot, according to the complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. OpenAI’s founder has acknowledged the models require copyrighted materials to be commercially viable, according to the complaint.
