OpenAI Can’t Force NYT to Hand Over Reporters’ Notes, Judge Says

Four copyright lawsuits over OpenAI Inc.'s models moved forward last week after a federal judge ruled on a slate of pending options.

Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang denied several motions to compel document production in the New York Times Co. and Authors’ Guild lawsuits against OpenAI Inc. and Microsoft Corp, according to the order filed Sept. 13 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Among the most prominent motions axed were OpenAI’s request for the Times’ reporters’ notes and documents that show exactly how the newspaper produced infringing outputs.
