OpenAI Can’t Nix Claims ChatGPT Outputs Infringe Copyrights (1)

A federal judge denied OpenAI Inc.'s motion to dismiss authors’ claims accusing ChatGPT’s outputs of infringing their copyrighted books.

The class plaintiffs’ complaint provided adequate evidence of infringement by the AI outputs, Judge Sidney H. Stein said in an opinion filed Monday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Stein relied on two ChatGPT outputs about books by “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin to demonstrate substantial similarity to the novels.

The complaint is part of a consolidated lawsuit of roughly a dozen cases against OpenAI that were merged for pretrial proceedings in April. ...
