An online sex trafficking law passed in 2018 in response to congressional and federal law enforcement investigations into the classified ads website Backpage.com is constitutional, a Washington, D.C., federal appeals court ruled on Friday.
The Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act amends a key internet immunity law known as Section 230 by criminalizing website operators who know that their services are used to facilitate prostitution or sex trafficking. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, passed in 1996, shields online platforms from lawsuits based on content created by their users.
