OMG Girlz Publicity Rights Win Over Dolls Slashed by $54 million

A California federal judge cut a $53.6 million punitive award from former teen pop group OMG Girlz’ $71 million win over toymaker MGA Entertainment Inc. over dolls a jury found to copy the band’s look.

The jury justifiably found that MGA’s popular L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. line of dolls misappropriated the band members’ likenesses and awarded $17.8 million in compensatory damages, Judge James V. Selna said in civil minutes filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Central District of California said. But trial evidence didn’t support a finding of willfulness, he said as he rejected the award as excessive. ...
