Oakland, San Francisco Squabble Over Airport Mark’s Strength

A California judge questioned Oakland’s intent behind its airport’s new moniker and probed the strength of San Francisco’s trademark, during a hearing to determine whether Oakland can use the name amid the cities’ infringement dispute.

Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson didn’t decide if San Francisco’s evidence of actual confusion among travelers between Oakland’s airport and San Francisco International Airport is enough to temporarily prohibit adoption of the new name. At stake during the two-hour hearing was San Francisco’s request for an injunction temporarily blocking Oakland’s adoption of the name “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.”
