NYT, Authors Push for Separate OpenAI Copyright Suit Depositions

New York Times Co. and the Authors Guild are pushing back on OpenAI Inc.'s request to coordinate depositions in copyright lawsuits against it so witnesses would be deposed only once across three proceedings.

Joining the depositions across the lawsuits is “impractical,” the Authors Guild argued in a letter filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York Wednesday. The New York Times, in a separate letter filed a day earlier, told the court OpenAI’s request would “substantially prejudice” the news publishers accusing the AI company of copyright infringement.
