Newsom’s California AI Safety Experts Eye Less Intrusive Policy

A panel tasked by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) to explore AI public safety policy recommendations may offer a less intrusive approach for developers than legislation that he vetoed in September, those involved in the project told Bloomberg Government.

Newsom announced the working group after he vetoed legislation (SB 1047) that would have required large AI developers take precautionary steps to prevent catastrophic risks like weapons development. The three-person Joint California Policy Working Group on AI Frontier Models is expected to unveil its preliminary recommendations in the first quarter of 2025.
