Publishing and media executives called on lawmakers to regulate the use of copyrighted works actively being used to train generative AI models.
Roger Lynch, CEO of Conde Nast, which owns The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Wired, and other magazines, specifically asked for legislation to clarify that the use of unlicensed copyrighted content to train AI models shouldn’t fall under the law’s fair-use doctrine. That standard permits unauthorized copying under certain circumstances.
Legislation as simple as clarifying that fair use doesn’t cover AI would be enough of a remedy for the publishing industry, Lynch said.
