Walt Disney Co. subsidiaries won a court order barring Redbox Automated Retail LLC from selling movie download digital codes separately from disc packages.
New labeling on a “Black Panther” movie combo pack—which said download codes can’t be sold separately—was enough for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to grant Disney’s motion for a preliminary injunction Aug. 29. The court had previously denied Disney’s injunction request against the DVD rental company.
The ruling shows that licensing terms in physical purchases can be critical to preserving a copyright holder’s right to control digital distribution of content.
