New Music Collective Tabs Top Warner Music Attorney as CEO

The under-construction group that will funnel royalties from music streaming services to copyright owners has tapped a Warner Music Group attorney as its first leader.

Kris Ahrend will serve as CEO of the The Mechanical Licensing Collective after nearly two decades as a music industry attorney, with prior stints at Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Rhino Entertainment Co., the MLC said in an emailed announcement.

The hire represents another step in the development of a new organization for getting royalties to rightsholders. The MLC must be operational in 2021 by the 2018 law that created it, as it sets up ...
