The royalty rate on physical music sales and permanent digital downloads will increase for the first time in 16 years with an almost one-third jump to $0.12 cents per track, under a new rule finalized by the Copyright Royalty Board.
The royalty rate for “mechanical” licenses will jump from 9.1 cents per track for sales of physical phonorecords such as compact discs and vinyl long play records, as well as permanent digital downloads and ringtones, according to a Federal Register notice published Thursday.
