Netflix Moves ‘Tiger King’ Copyright Suit to Federal Court

Netflix Inc. argued a copyright lawsuit involving its viral true crime documentary series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness” belongs in California federal court because its claims obstruct how Congress engages with international copyright law.

Filmmaker Timothy Sepi and his company Whyte Monkee Productions LLC sued Netflix in state court earlier this year for allegedly distributing unauthorized edits of his copyrighted footage across 11 countries.

Netflix, which wholly denies the allegations, said on Tuesday that the US District Court for the Northern District of California possesses diversity jurisdiction over the case, and it argued Sepi’s suit presents a federal question ...
