Motorola Engineer Found Guilty Of Passing Trade Secrets to Chinese

CHICAGO—A former Motorola Inc. software engineer who attempted to pass proprietary information to the Chinese military faces a lengthy prison term after a federal judge Feb. 8 found her guilty on three counts of theft of trade secrets (U.S. v. Jin).

U.S. District Court Judge Ruben Castillo of the Northern District of Illinois issued a 77-page decision determining that Hanjuan Jin, 41, had “criminally betrayed Motorola’’ by stealing its trade secrets. Castillo acquitted Jin, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in China, on three counts of electronic espionage benefitting the military of the People’s Republic of China.
