Monster Energy Wins Block to Rival’s ‘Reign’ Energy Drink

Monster Energy Co.'s request to bar a rival from using the word “Reign” on its energy drinks was preliminarily granted by a magistrate judge in Florida federal court.

VPX’s “Reign” energy drinks were likely to infringe Monster’s trademark, and it didn’t show that it had senior trademark rights in the word, according to the Friday report and recommendation.

VPX first sued Monster for allegedly infringing its “Reign” trademark and the trade dress for its “Bang” energy drink. Monster countersued, arguing that VPX infringed Monster’s “Reign” trademark, which it uses on low-calorie, sugar-free energy drinks. Monster said it has spent $42 ...
