Miley Cyrus settled copyright claims in Manhattan federal court with a Jamaican musician who claimed her 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop” ripped off his 1988 song “We Run Things.”
Michael May, professionally known as Flourgon, accused Cyrus of stealing the line “we run things/things don’t run we” from his song. May called the line a “creative and unique” phrase that comes from “strict Jamaican patois.”
The court rejected Cyrus’s attempt to dismiss the claims last June based on fair use or a lack of substantial similarity. The parties agreed to mediation in July, and announced they had reached a settlement ...
