Microsoft Owes $242 Million for Cortana Patent Infringement (1)

Microsoft Corp. must pay IPA Technologies Inc. $242 million after a federal jury in Delaware found its Cortana digital assistant infringed a patent that expired in January 2019.

Jurors also rejected the tech giant’s arguments that they should invalidate US Patent No. 7,069,560, according to a verdict issued Friday in the US District Court for the District of Delaware.

“We remain confident that Microsoft never infringed on IPA’s patents and will appeal,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.

Lawyers representing IPA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
