Microsoft Knocks Out D3D Imaging Patents at Federal Circuit

Microsoft Corp. got a pair of wins, as the Federal Circuit nixed patents that D3D Technologies Inc. has alleged are infringed by the HoloLens augmented-reality headset.

The appeals court on Tuesday upheld August 2022 rulings by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board finding that two patents covering three-dimensional imaging methods and technology were invalid.

The US Patent and Trademark Office administrative tribunal concluded that all 18 claims of D3D’s US Patent No. 8,384,771 were either obvious, anticipated, or both obvious and anticipated by earlier published inventions cited by Microsoft.
