Mattel Sued for Trademark Infringement Over ‘Emoji Style’ Barbie

Emoji Co. GmbH, which owns trademarks for emoji characters in numerous countries, hit Mattel Inc. with a lawsuit in California federal court Tuesday, alleging the toy giant violated the trademarks with its “EMOJI STYLE” line of Barbie dolls.

Emoji says Mattel not only used emoji marks without permission, but further applied to register “EMOJI STYLE” as its own mark in a way that was designed “to trade on the goodwill created by emoji Company.” Emoji says a German court already ordered Mattel to stop infringing the company’s rights and barred the sale of the doll in question.
