Lions Gate Slams Film Company ‘Revival’ of Its ‘Anchor Bay’ Mark

Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. accused film company Umbrelic Entertainment of trademark infringement for willfully using ‘Anchor Bay,’ the name of a film distributor subsidiary folded into Lions Gate Films in 2017.

Umbrelic, a “fledgling company,” used the mark to exploit the reputation of the home entertainment company Lions Gate acquired when it bought Starz Inc. in 2016, a Thursday complaint in the US District Court of the Central District of California said. While Lions Gate didn’t produce new movies under the brand after absorbing Anchor Bay, its complaint said it continues to promote existing works under the banner.
