LG Nixes Cell Phone Patent at Issue in Federal Circuit Appeal

LG Electronics Inc. defeated a patent relating to cell phone technology belonging to Taiwanese tech company CyWee Group Ltd. at the Federal Circuit.

CyWee’s US Patent No. 8,441,438 covered motion tracking in portable electronic devices. It filed a flurry of suits starting in 2014 accusing a long list phone makers of infringement including LG, Apple Inc., Samsung Elecs. Co., Motorola Mobility LLC, Huawei Device Co., and Google LLC. But LG joined ZTE Corp. to challenge the patent at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, ultimately convincing judges there to cancel it as obvious.
