Justices Reject Gun Accessory Maker’s Patent Spat With Sig Sauer

The US Supreme Court declined to review whether introductory phrases in patents necessarily limit the scope of the claims that follow them, rejecting NST Global LLC’s assertions that an administrative tribunal wrongly narrowed its patents covering a firearm brace.

In doing so, the justices on Tuesday left undisturbed what NST had contended is a gray area concerning how the phrases, known as preambles, are interpreted in court decisions and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

The patents at issue cover NST’s Stabilizing Brace, which the company describes as “a forearm stabilizing attachment allowing marksmen to discharge pistols more precisely.” ...
