Judge Rejects Artists’ Class Definition in Google AI Lawsuit (1)

A federal judge rejected the class definition proposed by artists accusing Google LLC of creating illegal copies of their works to train an AI model, but tentatively agreed to a revised definition.

The artists’ current class definition is flawed because their proposal would’ve required the court to consider each potential class member’s claim to determine if they qualified, according to an order striking the class allegations issued in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Judge Eumi K. Lee said an amended definition proposed by plaintiffs would cure the issue without resetting the case’s schedule.
