The IRS will continue its partnership with tax preparation companies to provide taxpayers with an additional option to file for free for another five years.
This extension with outside companies comes as the IRS considers continuing its own electronic free-filing system known as Direct File that the agency piloted this year. Republicans and many in the private sector have pointed to further investment in Free File program as an alternative to the Direct File pilot.
The partnership will be extended through 2029, said Ken Corbin, IRS Chief of Taxpayer Services, at the Council for Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement conference.
