The Internet Archive agreed to stop lending some of the digital books it had made available through an online library and to make monetary payments to a group of major book publishers in a closely watched copyright case over the legality of the controlled digital lending.
The Manhattan federal court’s approval of the a proposed consent judgment on Aug. 11 clears the way for the Internet Archive to appeal a ruling from US District Judge John Koeltl that its library infringed the copyrights of 127 books from HarperCollins Publishers LLC, Penguin Random House LLC, and others.
