Impossible Foods Inc.'s patent lawsuit against an upstart plant-based meat rival was expanded Monday to include Boston-based Ginkgo Bioworks Inc.
Impossible’s amended complaint in its lawsuit against Motif Foodworks, adding Ginkgo, a maker of yeasts for flavors and fragrances started by an MIT engineer.
Ginkgo spun off Motif and remains a major investor in the company, according to the filing. Impossible sued Motif in March 2022, alleging that a key ingredient in its products it calls hemami, which contains artificially produced bovine myoglobin, infringes seven of Impossible’s patents.
