Piranha Media Distribution LLC’s patent claims are ineligible because they’re directed at an abstract idea and don’t contain an inventive concept, Judge Josephine L. Staton said in a Sept. 11 opinion filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California. Staton granted Hulu’s motion to dismiss the case, saying the technology at the center of Piranha’s lawsuit fails the patent eligibility test under Section 101 of the Patent Act.
