Hearst Asks to Join Supreme Court Copyright Discovery Rule Fight

Hearst Newspapers LLC asked the US Supreme Court to add its appeal over the copyright statute of limitations to a case the justices already agreed to hear.

Hearst said its case “should be considered together” with that of Warner Chappell Music LLC, whose petition on the same question was granted on Sept. 29. Both want the court to reject application of the “discovery rule"—starting the plaintiff’s time limit to sue when an act is discovered rather than committed—to copyright cases.
