Latin American food company Goya Foods Inc. sued a Florida spice manufacturer Wednesday for allegedly infringing trade dress covering its “Sazón Goya” brand of seasonings.
Badia Spices Inc.'s “Sazón” seasonings are likely to confuse consumers, and Badia’s advertisements deceptively compare its product to Goya’s, according to the complaint filed in New Jersey federal court.
Goya says it offers over 2,500 Latin food products around the world, including spices, soups, beans, rice, and beverages, among other things. The company says it has sold “Sazón Goya” seasoning packets since at least 1977.
