Google Urges Patent Office to Nix Review Changes, Train for AI

Google Inc.'s general counsel called on the US Patent and Trademark Office to withdraw its proposed changes to its administrative tribunal’s review process and to institute an AI training program for examiners as well as fee increases to pay for it.

The office’s April advance notice of proposed rulemaking contained “very problematic” changes to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s inter partes reviews concerning challenges to a patent’s validity, Google General Counsel Halimah DeLaine Prado said in a letter in a letter to PTO Director Kathi Vidal dated Aug. 23.
