Google Escapes Uniloc Patent Cases Based on Fortress Agreement

Google LLC dodged 11 patent complaints brought by patent holding company Uniloc 2017 LLC after a California federal court found Uniloc lacked standing based on its breach of a revenue-sharing agreement with Fortress Credit Co. LLC.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California used similar logic in a ruling for Apple Inc. dismissing another Uniloc suit earlier this month.

Uniloc 2017 is “one of multiple Uniloc entities that have frequently asserted patent infringement in federal courts,” the court said, citing over 700 cases listing a Uniloc entity as a plaintiff. It brought 11 cases against Google for ...
