FTC Refers Complaint Against TikTok, ByteDance to DOJ

The FTC says it referred to the US Justice Department a complaint against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, according to a statement from the commission.

  • The agency’s referral stems from an order compliance review of Musical.ly for violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act; ByteDance acquired Musical.ly and merged it with TikTok
  • Commission also investigated additional potential violations of COPPA and the FTC Act
    • “The investigation uncovered reason to believe named defendants are violating or are about to violate the law and that a proceeding is in the public interest,” FTC says in a statement
