Fitbit Beats Light-Based Heart Rate Sensor Patents at Fed. Cir.

Fitbit‘s successful challenge to patent claims covering a light-based sensor that measures physiological information was upheld by the Federal Circuit Sept. 26.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board correctly found the challenged patent claims invalid based on a combination of prior art patents, applications, and publications, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said.

Fitbit successfully challenged claims of Valencell Inc.'s U.S. Patent Nos. 8,292,965, 8,886,269, and 8,989,830 at the PTAB. Valencell argued the board made multiple errors in finding the claims invalid and denying its motions to amend them.
