Federal Circuit Revives Hard Drive Patent Suit Targeting Seagate

The Federal Circuit breathed new life into an infringement suit against hard drive maker Seagate, saying the nine-year old suit merits a retrial because the district judge misinterpreted a term from a Pittsburgh inventor’s patent.

The noninfringement judgment in favor of Seagate Technology (US) Holdings Inc. against Lambeth Magnetic Structures LLC was based on erroneous claim construction of the term “uniaxial symmetry broken structure,” Judge Jimmie V. Reyna wrote in an opinion issued Wednesday by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
