Fanatics Thwarts Copyright Claim Over NHL Pucks With Game Ice

Sports merchandise seller Fanatics Inc. prevailed over a man’s claim that it ripped off his idea of a commemorative hockey puck with a cavity containing melted ice from notable hockey games.

William Grondin failed to identify a non-utilitarian, non-commonplace feature of his “Slice of the Ice” copyright, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said. After giving Grondin a chance to fix his complaint in a previous dismissal, Judge Gene E.K. Pratter’s ruling Friday dismissed the amended version offered no and offered no chance to try again.
