Facebook Inc. succeeded in canceling part of a patent describing an online chat system after a California federal court found claims in the patent were abstract.
Claims in Windy City Innovations LLC’s U.S. Patent No. 8,458,245 are invalid because they relate to the abstract ideas of transmitting messages over a computer network and displaying those messages, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled Sept. 24. Combining two abstract concepts doesn’t make the claims eligible for patent protection, the court said.
