Dropbox Loses Bid to Drop Claim in File-Sharing Patent Lawsuit

Dropbox Inc. will have to defend a patent dispute related to “methods and systems for sharing files and folders,” a federal court in Texas said, denying the cloud-storage company a partial summary judgment.

Dropbox filed other arguments for the court’s consideration, but “none are sufficiently persuasive,” Judge Alan Albright said in the Tuesday opinion for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.

Dropbox filed a motion for partial summary judgment on claims that Motion Offense’s “original applications” for file-sharing patents aren’t continuous and thus can’t benefit from being filed earlier than Dropbox’s allegedly infringing activities.
