The electronic music artist Marshmello escaped an appeal in the Ninth Circuit claiming that parts of his song “Happier” were taken from another electronic mixer named Arty.
Arty didn’t own the copyright to the electronic remix of the 2014 song “I Live,” which was allegedly copied by Marshmello, the panel affirmed Thursday in a nonprecedential ruling.
Arty was commissioned to create the remix of rock band OneRepublic’s “I Live,” and the court found that he revoked his rights to “any ownership or financial interest in the underlying musical composition” when he signed the work-for-hire contract.
